High barrier recyclable PP bags from Innovia Films for German snack brand Wildcorn

For its baked popcorn snacks, Berlin-based Wildcorn uses high-barrier, multilayer laminated polypropylene film that can be recycled in countries with recycling infrastructure to receive the material.
German snack maker Wildcorn has released 100% recyclable packaging for its Wildcorn range of organic popcorn. Founded in Berlin in 2016, Wildcorn makes a range of 100% organic, healthy and delicious snacks, including fried popcorn as a healthy alternative to potato chips. In 2017, the company launched its first sustainability program in partnership with Mellifera (the German bee protection agency) to restore/maintain the ecosystem by planting stripes to offset the use of agricultural resources.
Wildcorn began working with Innovia Films on the new packaging shortly after the supplier introduced Propafilm™ Strata, a high-barrier film that soon received the Made for Recycling label from German independent recycling consulting firm Interseroh.
Alasdair McEwen, Global Packaging Product Manager at Innovia Films, said: “This certification demonstrates the recyclability of our new Strata BOPP [biaxially oriented polypropylene] film. It is designed as a stand-alone solution for single film or for use in laminated constructions, to be” ready for processing” or for processing in countries where there is an infrastructure for the processing of polypropylene.
Propafilm Strata and White Cavity Oriented Polypropylene were laminated to Wildcorn packaging. Interseroh also tested the structure and they confirmed that it is 100% recyclable and issued a recycling certificate for packaging production.
According to Innovia, Propafilm Strata effectively blocks odors, mineral oils and oxygen even at high relative humidity, resulting in longer shelf life and less food waste. It is glossy, suitable for food contact and does not contain chlorine. Suitable for a variety of markets, the film is also printable and offers a wide range of sealing and thermal bonding options.
Tobias Enge, founder of Wildcorn, said: “Our products are healthy, natural and organic snacks that provide consumers with healthier options. But as a consumer products company, we have a responsibility to consider the full environmental impact of our products without packaging waste. Products are one of the major challenges facing our generation The focus on the “circular economy” is so prominent today that we decided to find a fully recyclable structure for our packaging while providing quality product protection, ensuring that our Consumers will continue to enjoy the same the same high quality and taste they expect.
“In the future, we plan to convert all of our products to new sustainable formats and continue to develop sustainable packaging.”
